NOTE: Sts in the center of the instep are placed on a holder and the sole and instep sts on each side of the held sts are worked back and forth in rows for the foot.

ROW 1: (RS) K28 for sole, knit the first 10 instep sts, place the next 8 instep sts for center top of foot on waste yarn holder, turn work, leaving rem instep sts unworked—48 sts rem; 28 sole sts; 10 instep sts each side of held sts.

ROW 2: (WS) P2tog, purl to end—1 st dec’d.

ROW 3: Ssk, knit to end—1 st dec’d.

Rep Rows 2 and 3 three more times, ending with a RS row—40 sts rem; 28 sole sts; 6 sts each side of instep. Work 32 rows even, ending with a RS row—piece measures 7" (18 cm) from CO; foot measures about 4" (10 cm) from where sts were placed on holder.

NOTE: To adjust foot length, work more or fewer rows here until piece measures 2" (5 cm) less than desired total foot length; every 2 rows added or removed will lengthen or shorten the foot by a little less than ¼" (6 mm).
